September – October 2027 Exhibits

Art Works celebrates its 24th anniversary this September—and 24 years of bringing innovative art and experiences to Richmond.

Leading the September exhibitions is Convergence, Erica Zoe Loustau’s immersive sculptural installation created specifically for Art Works’ main gallery. Along with new figurative and mixed-media work, The Space Between in partnership with Safe Harbor, and the All Media Show, there’s plenty to discover.

Join us September 24 from 6–8 p.m. for our 24th anniversary 4th Friday reception. The reception is free and open to the public.

Convergence by Erica Zoe Loustau

Erica Zoe Loustau will create a mixed-media sculptural installation specifically for Art Works’ main gallery, using the gallery’s space to surround visitors with floating forms resembling flocks or swarms. As viewers move through and around the work, repeated shapes shift and change with their perspective, creating an immersive experience of movement and illusion.

The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery at Art Works through November 13, 2027.

Into the Deep by Crystal James

Working in watercolor, oil, and mixed media, Crystal James creates narratives that are both alluring and unsettling. The Richmond-based figurative painter blends classical technique with surreal symbolism to explore beauty, identity, mortality, and transformation.

The exhibit will be in the Port I Gallery at Art Works through October 16, 2027.

The Space Between by Safe Harbor

Honoring the voices and stories of survivors of domestic violence

Art Works invites artists to submit work for The Space Between, a community exhibition honoring survivors of domestic violence through work created by survivors and artists creating in solidarity with them. The exhibition explores the often-invisible journey after violence—from grief and uncertainty to rebuilding trust, rediscovering identity, experiencing safety, and finding hope. Survival is not a single moment, but an ongoing journey.

Call for Entries: Submission details and online entry form coming soon. The exhibit will be in the Port II Gallery at Art Works through October 16, 2027.

Grey Area by Michael Young

Michael Young paints the human figure in a monochrome palette, using layered textures, tonal contrast, light, and shadow to bring out subtle gestures and expressions. His black-and-white technique gives the portraits a timeless, almost photographic quality.

The exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery at Art Works through October 16, 2027.

Myths and Reality by Olga Rokhmanyuk

Olga Rokhmanyuk, who creates under the name ROArtUS, is a Ukrainian-American artist living and working in Richmond, Virginia. In Between Nature and Myth, her colorful acrylic paintings bring birds, dogs, dragons, and other creatures into a shared world of nature and imagination. Bold color, decorative patterns, and expressive details create a playful meeting place between the real and mythical.

The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery at Art Works through October 16, 2027.

September 2027 All Media Show

The Community Bridge Project

RVA Thriving Artists presents the Community Bridge Project. Emerging artists from Central Virginia—including those from underserved and marginalized communities, are encouraged to submit their proposals through the online application form. Selected artists receive free exhibit space in the upstairs Bridge Project gallery at Art Works, along with mentorship and educational support. The program provides guidance on developing a theme, creating a cohesive body of work, preparing for exhibition, and promoting the show.
